According to TSN.ua: Scammers are increasingly using silent or quickly-dropped phone calls as a tool for fraud. This tactic is part of a scheme to identify active phone numbers. Once a number is confirmed as active, it is added to a list of potential victims, significantly increasing the risk of future targeted scams.

Fraudsters employ automated programs, or bots, to target hundreds of thousands of numbers daily. Answering such a call marks a number as 'active,' signaling to criminals that it is viable for their schemes. The consequences can be severe, including email breaches, SIM card hijacking, or bank account access. In one case in Ukraine, a 79-year-old man from Kyiv was defrauded of $15,000. This type of phone-based fraud is a growing global issue, exploiting the trust people place in their personal devices.

Protective Measures Against Fraudulent Calls

Law enforcement is taking action against these crimes. Recently, one participant in such a scam was detained, and part of the stolen funds was returned to the victim. In light of this, experts recommend several safety measures to protect against fraudulent calls:

• Immediately hang up if you receive a suspicious call.
• Enable your microphone's mute function to reduce the chance of information being gathered about you.
• Use specialized call-blocking software to filter out scam calls.

This situation highlights the escalating threat of phone call scams, a pressing concern for many in Ukraine. Given the heightened activity of fraudsters, adhering to safety protocols is crucial to avoid potential financial loss and protect personal information.
