The linguist named the Ukrainian word that has three stress variants.
Contradictions in word stress
Olha Vasyliieva, a philologist, talked about interesting features of word stress in the 'Language Issue' section of 'Hlavkom'. For example, in the word 'кладовище' (cemetery), stress can be placed on different syllables.
Vasyliieva also pointed out the double stress in the word 'вишиванка' (embroidery shirt), but the absence of such an accent in the word 'вишиваний' (embroidered). She illustrated this diversity of stresses using various reference books and dictionaries.
“In S. Holovashchuk's reference book 'Complex Cases of Stress' there is only one stress: виши́ванка (because 'виши́ваний'). In Mykola Pohrybnyi's 'Dictionary of Stresses' – there are two stresses: виши́ванка and вишивáнка. In modern dictionaries (SUM-20 and the online dictionary of the Language Information Fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), there is also a democratic approach – two stresses”
Another interesting topic for discussion was the correct selection of the naming form for the inhabitants of Sumy. Although the director of the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine supported the form 'сумчани' (Sumyans), linguist Olha Vasyliieva believes that this remains a controversial issue within the language.
