TikTok Fraud Using a Fake Account

According to TSN.ua: A woman in the Lviv region has been sentenced to five years in prison for fraud committed through a fake TikTok account. Posing as a military medic, she deceived a National Guardsman out of more than 930,000 hryvnias. The verdict was delivered by the Zhydachiv District Court of Lviv Oblast. This case highlights the growing trend of criminals exploiting social media platforms to target individuals, particularly during the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Case Details

The woman created an account named 'Angel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine' in late 2022. In February 2023, she asked the serviceman for 15,000 hryvnias to cover the funeral costs of a fictitious brother. Throughout March and May of that year, the fraudster extracted over 80,000 more hryvnias, allegedly for purchasing a house. In May 2023, she received an additional 35,000 hryvnias for the 'treatment' of invented injuries.

In June 2023, the woman obtained the serviceman's bank card and stole money directly from his account. The total damages inflicted on the victim amounted to 931,955 hryvnias. The convicted woman is unemployed, is raising three children, and has prior administrative offenses on her record.

During the trial, the court rejected the argument of 'sincere repentance,' as the woman expressed it only in her closing statement without any visible emotion, a detail noted by the Zhydachiv District Court. The fraudster withdrew cash from ATMs in the town of Zhuravno, making transactions of 10,000 to 20,000 hryvnias, and also transferred money to her own cards in installments of 25,000 to 30,000 hryvnias.

The situation with fraud in Ukraine, especially under wartime conditions, indicates increased risks for citizens who may become victims of scammers.

This case is another example of fraud in Ukraine, where criminals use social networks to deceive trusting individuals. The use of modern technologies like social media significantly simplifies the deception process. This incident also underscores the importance of caution and critical thinking when interacting with strangers online.
