A New Animal Shelter for 100 Dogs and Cats Planned in Southern, Odesa Region.
Animal Shelter Planned for Odesa Region
According to Novyny.live: The city of Southern in the Odesa region has announced plans to build a temporary holding facility for stray animals. A tender has been launched for the development of the project's design documentation. The project's client and financial backer is the Capital Construction Department of the Southern City Council, which will provide funding from the local budget.
The estimated cost for the design work is 410,000 Ukrainian hryvnias. The final deadline for contractors to submit their proposals is February 19, 2026. The completed shelter is designed to house at least 100 animals, specifically 60 dogs and 40 cats. The structure will be a single-story, non-capital building, which will allow for rapid implementation of the plan.
Animal Welfare Provisions
The project also includes plans for a water reserve sufficient to supply the animals for a minimum of three days. This is a critical feature for the proper care of stray animals during the period when they need help the most. Establishing this facility in Southern aims to improve the living conditions for stray animals and reduce their population on the city's streets.
This initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring the welfare of stray animals in a region that frequently grapples with large populations of homeless pets. As global attention to animal rights and protection grows, this shelter could serve as a model for other Ukrainian cities. Furthermore, implementing such projects helps foster greater public responsibility in pet ownership and can reduce instances of animals being abandoned.
