NBC News: EU countries prepare for possible military conflict with Russia.
Europe prepares for 'extreme military scenarios' amid potential Trump return and threats from Russia - NBC News
European countries are increasing their defense and military spending. An NBC News investigation reveals the specific measures European states are taking to prepare for potential escalation. Lithuania plans to mine bridges on its border with Russia, and NATO ships in the Baltic Sea are monitoring a suspected Russian 'shadow fleet' believed to be damaging underwater communication cables.
Additionally, to ensure security in European airspace, a large missile defense system similar to Israel's 'Iron Dome' is planned. A representative of the European Union stated that 'Europe must be ready for the most extreme military scenarios' and that more spending is needed to prevent war. The position of the new U.S. president, Donald Trump, who criticizes European support for Ukraine and urges NATO to pay more for its security, poses an additional threat.
Increased defense efforts and spending
European countries are also increasing their defense budgets. Lithuania plans to raise its defense spending to 5-6% of GDP, becoming a leader among NATO countries. The Baltic states are constructing the 'Baltic Defense Line' - a series of anti-tank trenches and fortifications. Norway advises its citizens to stockpile water, food, and other essential items in case of military action.
However, according to expert Keir Giles from the Chatham House analytical center, Western European countries are still not grasping the seriousness of the situation. They continue to live in peace, not realizing the threat of war. But the rising tensions in the region and the position of the new U.S. president indicate that increased defense efforts and spending are necessary to ensure Europe's security.
