Parasites in food: which popular products are dangerous for health.
According to ТСН: Our favorite dishes may hide dangerous enemies. We think that it's enough to boil water or wash fruits thoroughly, but even high temperatures do not always save us from these little threats.
Let's consider which common products can become a source of infection.
Fresh fish
Sushi, fried herring, and lightly salted fish may look like safe options, but we should not forget about parasites. The most common ones are
anisakids or opisthorchis. Larvae, when entering the body, settle in the liver and gallbladder, which can lead to inflammation of the bile ducts, thickening of the bladder walls, and the formation of stones.
Animal liver
Popular beef or pork liver can also be dangerous. It may contain
adult worms or larvae of tapeworms. Insufficient heat treatment can lead to digestive problems and overall weakening of the body.
Seafood and mollusks
Oysters, crabs, mussels – these are delicacies for gourmets, but they can also be dangerous. The parasite
gnathostomiasis, common in mollusks, can affect the brain and cause eosinophilic meningitis. The consequences can be extremely serious, including paralysis, loss of vision, and even death.
Mushrooms, berries, and fresh vegetables
Parasites do not only hide in meat. Wild mushrooms, vegetables, and berries contaminated with
animal feces can contain eggs of worms, which are not visible to the naked eye. Multiple washes do not always guarantee safety.
How to protect yourself
There are several simple but effective rules that can help you protect yourself:
Always subject fish and meat to prolonged heat treatment – fry, boil or bake for at least 10 minutes at high temperature.
Before cooking, keep products frozen at -20°C for at least a week.
Never consume raw or undercooked products.
Wash your hands before eating and after working with raw products.
Now you know how to protect your health and avoid unpleasant surprises. Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
