German Authorities Charge Ukrainian Ex-Officer Over Nord Stream Pipeline Blasts.
Serhiy Kuznetsov Faces Accusations
According to Espreso.tv: Germany's Federal Prosecutor has indicted former Ukrainian special forces officer Serhiy Kuznetsov for the sabotage of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines. The charges were formally announced on July 2, 2026, relating to explosions that occurred on September 26, 2022. According to the indictment, the attacks were carried out on orders from Ukrainian state authorities. Kuznetsov was taken into custody in the summer of 2025.
International Reactions and Developments
The pipeline bombings sent shockwaves through the global community. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg described the incident as an act of sabotage. During the investigation, Denmark barred Russian representatives from participating in the probe on March 16, 2023. On April 27, 2023, it emerged that a Russian vessel, the SS-750, was positioned near the pipeline at the time of the explosions.
Furthermore, on June 10, 2023, The Wall Street Journal raised the possibility of Polish involvement in the events. Separately, on August 21, 2025, Italian police detained a Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of being connected to the sabotage. By August 28 of the same year, German media outlets ARD, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Zeit reported that all individuals linked to the attack were Ukrainian nationals.
At the time of the incident, Kuznetsov was serving as a special operations officer in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The trial for Serhiy K. is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2026. When questioned by reporters about the case, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated:
“We do not yet know all the details of this process.”
These accusations could significantly strain diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Europe, given that the pipeline attacks severely impacted regional energy security. The case continues to unfold, with the investigation raising numerous questions about the involvement of various countries. Kuznetsov's upcoming trial is expected to reveal more details about the incident and its potential connections. Statements from high-ranking officials underscore the case's importance for international politics and regional security.
