Ice Storm Cuts Power to 65 Settlements in Ternopil Region.
Widespread Power Outages in Ternopil Following Ice Storm
According to TSN.ua: A severe ice storm has caused major power disruptions across Ukraine's Ternopil region. Emergency blackouts have left dozens of settlements without electricity after ice accumulation damaged critical infrastructure.
As of this morning, 27 high-voltage power lines (10 kV) have been damaged, with an additional 16 lines experiencing partial failures. The outages have affected 65 settlements in total, 42 of them partially. Power is currently limited for 8,450 consumers, with an estimated 4.8 MW of capacity undelivered. In response to the crisis, Ukraine's national power company, 'Ukrenergo,' announced on February 6th that it would implement round-the-clock scheduled power cuts. While the situation is being managed, full restoration of electricity is expected to take time. Such winter storms are a recurring challenge for Ukraine's energy grid, which has faced increased strain in recent years.
Energy System Resilience in Extreme Weather
This incident underscores the critical need for energy systems to be resilient against extreme weather. The ice-induced power loss not only disrupts electricity but can have severe knock-on effects for residents, impacting heating and access to other essential services. Restoring power requires significant effort from utility crews, which may delay a return to normalcy in the hardest-hit areas.
