Zelensky Dismisses Yermak: What is Known About the Resignation of the Head of the Office.
According to ТСН: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree dismissing Andriy Yermak from the position of head of the president's office.
Yermak submitted his resignation on the same day that searches by NABU and SAP took place at his residence.
It is expected that his dismissal is related to a large-scale corruption scandal in the energy sector, where an investigation against the company 'Energoatom' is ongoing under the supervision of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP).
Andriy Yermak's Resignation: What is Known
In his video address, the president announced that Yermak had submitted his resignation.
'I want there to be no questions regarding Ukraine. Therefore, today such internal decisions. First. There will be a reset of the Office of the President of Ukraine. The head of the Office, Andriy Yermak, has submitted a resignation letter,' Zelensky noted.
The decree was published on the official website of the president. Zelensky thanked Yermak for his work, especially for representing the Ukrainian position in negotiations, and announced the reset of the Office of the President.
NABU Searches of the Former Head of the Office: Possible Reasons
Yermak's dismissal came after searches conducted by NABU. The agency promises to provide additional information later.
Yermak himself stated his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. However, he did not specify which case law enforcement officers are working on.
'There are no obstacles for investigators. They were granted full access to the apartment, present are my lawyers who are interacting with law enforcement. From my side - complete assistance,' Yermak stated.
It is known that NABU is investigating large-scale corruption in 'Energoatom,' and suspicions have already been raised against eight individuals in this case.
Reactions from Europe
The European Union cautiously reacted to the searches of Yermak, noting that the actions of NABU and SAP demonstrate the effectiveness of anti-corruption bodies.
The spokesman for the European Commission stated that the investigation 'clearly showed that anti-corruption bodies really exist and are allowed to function.' He also emphasized the importance of fighting corruption for Ukraine's EU accession, while the Polish Minister of National Defense called for transparency in anti-corruption policy.
Yermak's Resignation Was Previously Discussed in Ukraine
Andriy Yermak had headed the Office of the President of Ukraine since February 11, 2020. During this time, the public has repeatedly demanded his dismissal.
It is worth noting that a session of the Verkhovna Rada, planned to consider the dismissal of ministers, was blocked by deputies demanding the resignation of the entire Cabinet of Ministers.
The Resignation of the Head of the Office Complicates Kyiv's Position Before Crucial Talks with the US
Yermak's dismissal, announced by Zelensky, complicates Ukraine's position ahead of negotiations with the United States. This development is inconvenient for the president, given Yermak's recent elevation to the head of the negotiation team.
Despite Zelensky's efforts in combating corruption, including the dismissal of some high-ranking officials over corruption allegations, these issues may become obstacles for negotiations with the US and Russia.
Andriy Yermak's resignation highlights the complex situation in Ukraine amid an ongoing anti-corruption investigation. This decision may have been an attempt by the president to demonstrate his determination in combating corruption, which remains an important aspect for Ukraine's international partners. Furthermore, it could pose serious challenges to political stability and strategic negotiations with the West.
