Ukraine's War: The Human and Structural Cost
According to Novyny.live: The full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022, has inflicted severe civilian casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure. In the Odesa region, the conflict has claimed the lives of 244 civilians, including 231 adults and 13 children. A further 1,272 people have been wounded, comprising 1,189 adults and 83 children. These figures underscore the devastating human impact of the war on local communities.
The City of Odesa Under Fire
The port city of Odesa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has endured 193 attacks over the four-year period. The year 2025 proved the most difficult, with the city suffering 75 strikes. These attacks killed 145 civilians, 10 of whom were children, and injured 635 people, including 32 children. This persistent threat highlights the ongoing vulnerability of non-combatants in the conflict.
Odesa's cultural heritage has also been a target. A total of 245 monuments have been damaged, 127 of which are residential buildings. By February 2026, significant restoration efforts had nearly completed work on the Transfiguration Cathedral and the 'Bristol' Hotel. Additionally, 11 communal healthcare facilities were damaged in attacks, severely hampering medical service provision in the region.
Overall, the situation in Odesa and the surrounding region remains dire, characterized by substantial loss of life and the destruction of critical infrastructure. This devastation underscores the urgent need for international support and recovery initiatives. The war's destructive impact on civilian life and cultural landmarks necessitates continued efforts for both protection and rebuilding, with international aid playing a crucial role in the region's future.
