Orban on the Future of Ukraine: He Proposed the Creation of a Buffer State.
According to ТСН: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed a cynical opinion about the future of Ukraine, claiming that the country should become a buffer state.
In an interview with the newspaper Welt, Orban noted that the Russians are complaining that the West has armed Ukraine by integrating it into NATO structures and intends to make it a de jure member of the alliance. In his opinion, this process jeopardizes the balance of power. At the same time, Orban emphasized that the West believes that Russia has not accepted the balance established after NATO's expansion and aims to occupy Ukraine in order to eliminate its status as a buffer zone and prepare further actions against NATO states.
Orban's Proposals
"The only possible long-term solution is based on the fundamental principle that the post-war order should be that Ukraine becomes a buffer state again, as it once was. Russia retains the territory agreed upon at an international peace conference, and everything west of this line – up to the eastern border of NATO – will represent the territory of the Ukrainian state that will again exist as a buffer state," Orban noted.
He added that NATO and Russia must coordinate the size and equipment of the limited Ukrainian forces that can operate in the buffer zone, and both sides must guarantee that no one can subjugate this buffer state.
"This is a matter for discussion. International law provides instruments to establish such a guarantee system," Orban concluded.
Previous statements suggested that Orban is an accomplice to Putin's terror. Such a statement was the consideration that the massive attack by Russia on the capital of Ukraine occurred immediately after Orban's visit and his empty statements about 'peace.' Critics argue that Putin exploits such politicians in his bloody political game.
Orban's words elicited mixed reactions both in Ukraine and outside it. His opinion on the future of Ukraine as a buffer zone underscores the complex geopolitical situation in which the country finds itself. Despite calls from representatives of certain states for a peaceful resolution, real steps in this direction remain very questionable.
