Gas Transit to Ukraine Suspended

According to TSN.ua: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has announced a suspension of natural gas transit to Ukraine, issuing an ultimatum tied to oil deliveries. This move follows a 30-day blockade of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which Hungary claims Ukraine has kept closed. Orban stressed the need for an immediate resolution to the standoff.

In his statement, Orban made clear that Hungary will not supply gas to Ukraine until oil shipments from the Ukrainian side resume.

“As long as Ukraine does not deliver oil, it will not receive gas from Hungary,”
he emphasized. This declaration marks the latest escalation in the ongoing energy conflict between the two neighboring countries.

Regional Developments

Compounding the situation, recent events have added to the tension. On January 27, a Russian drone strike hit a 25,000-cubic-meter fuel storage tank. Additionally, on February 18, Hungary and Slovakia announced a temporary halt in diesel fuel deliveries to Ukraine. These developments highlight the deepening energy crisis in the region and raise concerns about Ukraine's energy security.

The suspension of gas transit from Hungary poses a serious threat to Ukraine's energy stability, a country already grappling with numerous challenges in this sector. The blockade of the Druzhba pipeline and Orban's ultimatum jeopardize energy supplies and risk further escalating the dispute between the states. Finding a compromise is critical to preventing a worsening of the situation and ensuring regional energy security.
