US-Denmark Negotiations Over Greenland

According to TSN.ua: Despite objections from Greenlandic officials, the US Department of Defense is quietly negotiating with Denmark to bolster its military presence in Greenland. General Gregory Guillot, head of US Northern Command, has highlighted the need for "enhanced access to multiple bases across Greenland." Specific sites of interest include Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and Kangerlussuaq in the southwest—both formerly operated as US bases, though much of their infrastructure has since been dismantled.

These discussions are reportedly grounded in a 1951 US-Danish defense pact that governs bilateral military cooperation. General Guillot has hinted that a new agreement may be necessary as talks with Copenhagen continue. So far, Denmark has not raised any objections to the ongoing negotiations.

Status of the Agreement

Two months ago, US President Donald Trump claimed that a deal with Greenland was nearly finalized. However, Greenlandic representatives have firmly denied that any such agreement exists. As analyst Ulrik Pram Gad noted,

“Denmark and Greenland could theoretically say 'no' to the US, but in practice, they never would.”
This highlights the delicate balance between American strategic interests and regional political dynamics.

As a result, the situation surrounding US military involvement in Greenland remains tense, and future actions could carry major implications for the region's strategic landscape. Expanding US base operations in this strategically vital area may reshape relations among the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, while also affecting Arctic security amid intensifying competition among global powers.

With climate change reshaping the Arctic environment and geopolitical risks on the rise, the question of military access to Greenland is taking on renewed urgency for all parties involved.
