According to TSN.ua: Scientists have created a detailed digital map of the terrain beneath the Antarctic ice sheet using a novel mapping technique. This breakthrough could significantly improve predictions of glacial melt and future global sea level rise. The research team identified over 30,000 hills, each at least 50 meters high, and a colossal channel measuring roughly 50 meters deep, 6 kilometers wide, and stretching for more than 400 kilometers. Understanding this hidden landscape is crucial for forecasting how Antarctic ice will respond to a warming climate.
Significance of the New Research
The study was conducted by a team that combined satellite imagery with computer modeling. This approach yielded far more detailed information about the subglacial topography than previous attempts, which relied on radar measurements from aircraft or snowmobiles. As researcher Helen Ockenden noted,
“It’s like before you had a grainy pixelated film camera, and now you have a properly magnified digital image of what’s actually going on.”
Team member Stuart Jamieson emphasized the importance of this new method, stating:
“This is the beginning of a new approach to studying what lies beneath the ice.”The discovered structures could profoundly impact our understanding of Antarctic processes and, consequently, forecasts for future global sea level rise.
