Ukraine's New Spearfishing Regulations: Banned Zones and Fines Effective 2026.
Spearfishing Regulations in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: New rules governing spearfishing in Ukraine will come into force in 2026, establishing specific permissions and prohibitions. The activity will only be permitted in designated fishery water bodies and must comply with amateur and sport fishing regulations. Participants are restricted to using spear guns, as scuba gear is expressly forbidden. Furthermore, all spearfishers must possess a valid underwater hunter's certificate.
Prohibited Areas and Catch Limits
Starting in 2026, spearfishing will be banned in several specific locations. These include:
- Lock channels
- Newly created reservoirs
- Bridge protection zones
- Wintering pits for fish
- Spawning grounds
The ban also extends to industrial fishing areas, as well as channels near thermal power plants and electrical stations.
Regarding catch limits, the daily allowance is set at 3 kilograms per person or one trophy fish. Exceeding this daily limit can result in a fine of up to 680 Ukrainian hryvnias. These regulations are designed to promote sustainable fishing practices and protect Ukraine's aquatic resources. Spearfishing is a popular sport in the region, and these rules aim to balance recreational activity with conservation needs.
The introduction of these new spearfishing rules is part of Ukraine's broader efforts to maintain ecological balance within its water ecosystems. Prohibiting hunting in sensitive areas like spawning grounds and bridge protection zones aims to minimize negative impacts on fish stocks and aid in population recovery. Adherence to the established catch limits further underscores the national commitment to responsible stewardship of natural resources.
