Fighter after amputation and captivity returned to service: how a modern prosthesis changed life

According to ТСН: After a serious injury in 2022, the fighter underwent amputation, Russian captivity, re-amputation, and a long recovery. Despite all the trials, Dmytro returned to service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, using a mechanical prosthesis.

In order to restore full mobility and an active life, he needed a modern fourth-level prosthesis — Genium X3. However, government funding for its purchase was insufficient, and the soldier decided to seek help from the 'Heart of Azovstal'.

'Our 'Health' program addresses both physical and mental health. It is a comprehensive support system, regardless of the defender's condition. The main goal is to restore the quality of life of every defender of Mariupol as much as possible. Our task: full support, assistance, the best and most effective partners, and maximum restoration of quality of life,' said the director of the 'Heart of Azovstal', Ksenia Sukhova.

The organization joined forces with the Social Insurance Fund, which allowed them to purchase the prosthesis, adjust it, and provide full support during rehabilitation. The Genium X3 is one of the best prostheses in the world: it enables running, cycling, overcoming difficult terrain, and leading a maximally active lifestyle.

Currently, Dmytro is undergoing walking training with the new prosthesis. He notes that his main desire is to regain freedom of movement and ride bicycles with his children.

'I have always tried to convey to my children that self-improvement can completely reshape a person. My children have already received bicycles. I would really like to learn how to ride. With this prosthesis, it is possible. Maybe in a week or two, I will be able to run with them,' shared Dmytro Mashkin.

It is worth noting that 'Heart of Azovstal' is a support project for the defenders of Mariupol and their families, founded by Ukrainian businessman Rinat Akhmetov. The project has already supported over 7000 defenders of Mariupol, providing comprehensive assistance that includes physical and psychological rehabilitation, prosthetics, housing for defenders with I and II disability groups, as well as help with education and employment.

Dmytro Mashkin is a vivid example of the resilience of Ukrainian soldiers who, despite severe injuries, find the strength to return to active life and service. The 'Heart of Azovstal' project plays an important role in restoring the lives of those who defend the country and provides necessary support to restore not only physical but also psychological stability.
