Lake China in Odesa region on the brink of disaster: 8 villages may run out of water
In the south of the Odesa region, Lake China and other Danube lakes are on the verge of depletion. This could lead to businesses and residents of many communities in the region being left without water supply, said the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleg Kiper.

The Odesa lakes, which provide water for domestic use, irrigation of fields, and fish farming, are facing a crisis due to shallowing, water shortages, and climate change. The water level in some lakes has dropped to a critical level.

What the authorities are doing

From 2020 to 2025, the Odesa Regional State Administration allocated over 120 million UAH for the renovation of lakes and the construction of irrigation networks. Some of these funds were used for clearing waterways, which partially restored the balance. Projects for international support are also being prepared. The Odesa Regional State Administration is also requesting funds from the state budget to save Lake China, which is the only source of water for eight settlements and irrigates over 12 thousand hectares of fields.

The nature of the Odesa lakes is in crisis due to shallowing and climate change, which may affect water supply and the economy of the region. The authorities are taking measures, but additional support is needed to save the water bodies.
