Consequences of the shelling of Dnipro

The number of injured has increased — there are already 40. Fortunately, the search and rescue operations are completed. Unfortunately, the death toll stands at four.

The majority of the injured have been hospitalized. It is known that 11 injured individuals are in critical condition. Medics are making every effort to save their lives.

Panic and mutual aid

The shelling of Dnipro occurred after 10 a.m., when the working day began. The city was filled with construction and busy traffic, and many people were on the streets.

After the explosion at the service station and enterprise, a fire broke out, and the building suffered significant damage. Passersby and workers rushed to save the injured. Rescuers managed to carry four people from the collapsed building.

First-hand accounts of the rescue moments were shared at the Chemical Technology University, where bloodied people rushed.

“There was panic, people ran in from the street, they were coming from the stop, heading to work or home. Men started to enter the shelter, apparently those who worked nearby. They had injuries to their limbs, faces, abrasions. We called an ambulance but could not get through due to lack of communication. We provided aid with what we had, disinfecting wounds, stopping bleeding,” says Olena Hnatko, deputy dean of the Chemical Technology University.

Explosion right after the alarm

The owner of the service station, which operated in this building, recounted the suddenness of the event.

“Everyone was at their posts. We have nearly 20 employees on staff. We saw a flash. I was just in the workshop. There was an explosion. And that’s it. Then we fell to the floor, got up, all covered in dust. I started running around the service, looking for employees, when I saw that everyone had survived,” says Vitaliy Kovalенко, the owner of the service station.

People said they did not manage to hide. The explosion occurred almost immediately after the alarm was announced.

“The alarm went off and there was an arrival right after. How to react? We didn’t have time. The stairs were not damaged. We went down the stairs. A lot of dust, loud, many tears, frightened people. Everything as usual,” said a witness.

Female employees of the enterprise, where bags were produced, spoke about the deceased colleagues who remained inside the building.

Destruction in Dnipro

In addition to the service station and enterprise, residential buildings were also severely affected — windows were shattered in high-rise buildings. The university's educational building was also left without windows, but there were no people in classrooms, as classes were not being held.

The police report that currently no missing persons reports have been received, but the damaged structures continue to be examined. An assessment of the extent of the destruction is underway.
