Ukraine Implements Hourly Power Outage Schedules for February 24.
Power Outage Schedules Across Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: On February 24, 2023, Ukraine will implement scheduled hourly power outages. These emergency measures are a direct result of the widespread damage inflicted on the country's energy infrastructure by a massive Russian missile and drone attack on February 23. The assault has created a critical power deficit, forcing authorities to impose consumption limits across multiple regions.
DTEK and local energy companies will publish the specific outage schedules. In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, hourly power cuts will be in effect starting February 24. Similar schedules will operate in Kharkiv Oblast from 00:00 to 24:00 on the same day. By order of the national energy company Ukrenergo, Cherkasy Oblast will also introduce hourly outage schedules. Separately, Mykolaiv Oblast will implement its own hourly schedule from 08:00 to 23:59.
Energy System Status and Government Response
The primary goal of these outages is to stabilize the national energy grid and ensure the safe consumption of electricity during this emergency. Authorities are urging citizens to show understanding and strictly adhere to the published schedules. These rolling blackouts are a common wartime measure to prevent a total grid collapse when generation capacity is severely damaged.
The introduction of scheduled blackouts is part of a broader effort to restore stability to Ukraine's energy system, which has been systematically targeted since the full-scale invasion began. This decision underscores the severity of the situation and the need to balance electricity consumption with the crippled infrastructure's limited capabilities.
Public adherence to the schedules is crucial to reduce strain on the grid and ensure the energy system continues to function.
While these restrictions will significantly disrupt daily life, they are a necessary and forced response to the ongoing external aggression against Ukraine's critical infrastructure.
