According to ТСН: The powerful storm 'Hannes' caused significant damage to the Finnish energy company Elenia. Due to the storm, more than 100 thousand consumers were left without electricity.

Situation in the country

The head of emergency preparedness at the company, Heiki Paananen, noted that this is the largest outage in the last decade, surpassing the consequences of the November storm 'Yari' in 2024.

He also added that Elenia began preparations for the storm before Christmas, considering the initial forecasts from meteorologists. However, the storm turned out to be much more dangerous than expected.

Restoration of electricity supply

As of the morning of December 28, about 115 thousand households in Finland were still without electricity. The hardest hit were customers of Elenia in the central and southern regions of the country.

Paananen reported that the scale of destruction is serious, and the repair process is complicated by adverse weather conditions. Currently, 700 emergency sites have been recorded, and their number may double before power supply is fully restored.

'There will definitely be work for several days here. It will take until next week before all power outages are resolved,' predicts Paananen.

The night’s bad weather resulted in nearly 600 emergency situations. Among them are fallen trees on roads and power lines, as well as roof and structural damage due to strong winds.

It is worth noting that the USA also suffered from a powerful winter storm, which was the strongest in recent years. Authorities declared a state of emergency.

The situation with restoring electricity supply in Finland raises concerns, as storm 'Hannes' proved to be unexpectedly destructive. The company will need to make considerable efforts to restore power supply to those affected, and it is anticipated that the work will take several days. This incident again highlights the importance of preparedness for natural disasters and the improvement of energy network infrastructure.
