Fire at the Chernobyl confinement localized.
Fire at the new safe confinement has been localized - reports the Minister of Environmental Protection
The ignition of the filler of the external shell of the new safe confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant has been successfully localized, as reported by Svitlana Hrynchuk, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, on her social media page.
«At 21:30, the ignition of the filler of the external shell of the NSC Arch was localized. The radiation background in the Exclusion Zone is normal and is being monitored through an automated monitoring system in continuous mode at 39 points», - Hrynchuk noted.
Hrynchuk stated that data on the radiation situation was transmitted to the dispatch center every hour, and in emergency conditions - every minute.
«Control levels of ambient dose equivalent power are not exceeded. The radiation situation is under control», - Hrynchuk summarized.
It is worth noting that previously, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a Russian strike drone with an explosive payload hit the protective shelter at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the fire was extinguished, but the damage to the shelter is assessed as significant. This was also confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
It should be noted that the confinement, which was constructed to protect against potential negative consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, has been in operation for several years. It was built from concrete mixtures and metal structures, took 206 days to construct, and involved the active work of 90 thousand people.
The fire occurred specifically at the new facility - the NSC, which was built to replace the already outdated confinement and ensure safety against possible risks of spontaneity at the site of the Chernobyl nuclear power station.
