Ukraine's Successful Defense

According to TSN.ua: In the early hours of March 7, 2023, Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully repelled a large-scale, combined assault by the Russian Federation targeting critical infrastructure. This attack represents a continued pattern of Russian aggression aimed at crippling Ukraine's energy and civilian systems. By 09:00, Ukrainian air defense units had intercepted and destroyed 472 aerial targets out of 509 total weapons detected, including 19 missiles and 453 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Attack Vectors and Interception Results

The assault was concentrated on Kyiv, Kharkiv, and the regions of Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi. The Russian forces launched a massive barrage consisting of:

  • 480 attack drones
  • 14 "Kalibr" cruise missiles
  • 13 ballistic missiles
  • 2 "Zircon" hypersonic missiles

Despite the defense efforts, 9 missiles and 26 drones struck 22 locations. The most severe consequences were in Kharkiv, where the attack resulted in civilian casualties, including the deaths of two children.

Ukrainian air defense operations proved highly effective, neutralizing a significant portion of the incoming threat. The confirmed interceptions included:

  • 8 "Iskander-M"/S-400 ballistic missiles
  • 11 "Kalibr" cruise missiles
  • 453 enemy UAVs

These results underscore the growing capability of Ukraine's military to defend its airspace, even against complex, multi-vector attacks. The high interception rate is critical for protecting civilian lives and infrastructure as the war continues. While this defense was a tactical success, it highlights the ongoing need for sustained international support to maintain and enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities against future Russian assaults.
