Research: Mental Disorders Affect Partner Choice and Risk to Children.
Influence of Mental Disorders on Partner Choice and the Risk of Transmission to Children
According to inkorr.com: A new study published in Nature Human Behavior demonstrates how mental disorders can influence partner choice and the likelihood of transmission to children. Scientists analyzed data from over 15 million individuals suffering from various mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, depression, and autism.
It was found that if one partner has a mental disorder, the likelihood of passing this condition to offspring increases. The reasons for this can be both a desire to understand one's partner and the influence of social stigma.
“If both parents face the same mental disorder, the chances of transmitting it to their child double. This is particularly noticeable in the case of schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, and addictions,” the scientists note.
Psychotherapist Anna Sobchak noted that in Ukraine, the number of people seeking psychological help is on the rise. However, as she believes, this may be related not only to a desire to improve one's mental health but also to an aspiration to enhance one's social status.
In the expert's opinion, mental disorders are becoming somewhat “fashionable,” as therapy is not accessible to everyone, and seeking treatment sometimes means being on trend.
The study in Nature Human Behavior highlights the importance of understanding how mental disorders impact relationships and the risks of transmission to children. The results show a complex positive-negative effect that is crucial to consider when developing support strategies for such families.
The study opens new perspectives in understanding the complex relationships between mental disorders, partner choice, and family dynamics. This is another step toward recognizing the importance of mental health in our society and the need to support families facing these issues. Correct information and timely assistance can significantly improve the situation for the better.
