A Pledge to Rebuild Syria

According to TSN.ua: During a meeting with Syria's new president, Ahmed al-Shaar, Russian President Vladimir Putin promised assistance in rebuilding Syria after a devastating conflict that has lasted nearly 15 years. This pledge marks a significant statement in the context of a long-running war where Russia previously vowed to destroy militant groups it labeled as 'bandits'. The conflict has left Syria's infrastructure in ruins and created a massive humanitarian crisis.

Recall that in 2016, Russia's Foreign Ministry declared its intent to 'fight these bandits' until their complete destruction. In 2017, the Russian Defense Ministry reported wounding the rebel leader al-Julani in an airstrike. The Syrian government, which came under the control of rebels led by Ahmed al-Shaar in December 2024, has demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from the Qamishli base. This base has served as a key outpost for controlling northeastern Syria since 2019. Russia is currently relocating equipment and heavy weaponry from Qamishli to its Hmeimim airbase.

Russia and Syria's Cooperative Future

Vladimir Putin emphasized, 'I know that a great deal will need to be rebuilt in Syria, and our economic operators, including in the construction sector, are ready for this joint work.' He also noted that 'there have never been any dark pages between Russia and Syria,' signaling an intent to continue cooperation between the two nations moving forward.

This development highlights a shift in Russia's posture toward Syria, as Moscow was previously an active combatant against rebel forces. The promise of national reconstruction may indicate a new phase in bilateral relations, focused on recovery and stability. However, the situation remains tense, given the Syrian authorities' demands for a Russian military withdrawal, which could significantly influence future developments in the region.
