India and Russia have signed a military agreement in the Arctic: what it means for the world.
According to ТСН: India is strengthening cooperation with Russia in the Arctic, where Vladimir Putin is increasing military presence, including through nuclear weapons and submarines.
New military agreement
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed an agreement with Putin that will allow India to use Russian naval ports in the strategic Arctic corridor that connects Europe and Asia. The Russian side will also prepare Indian sailors for work in polar waters.
Visit of Vladimir Putin
This agreement was reached during Putin's two-day state visit to India, during which the Russian leader seeks to secure support despite pressure from the US.
The dictator stated that new logistic routes are being established in the Arctic between the two countries to strengthen their alliance.
It is worth noting that Putin made his first visit to India in four years. This visit took place against the backdrop of rising tension in India's relations with Western countries, associated with the active import of Russian oil after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Energy supplies
During the meeting, Vladimir Putin assured that Russia would provide India with uninterrupted fuel supplies, responding to US calls to limit purchases of Russian oil.
However, India responded cautiously to this. Foreign Minister Vikram Misri emphasized that the country's energy companies make decisions based on market conditions and commercial interests.
Leaders also released a joint statement noting that in the current 'complex, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian relations remain resilient to external pressure.'
This agreement and Putin's visit to India demonstrate both countries' desire to strengthen cooperation amid increasing international challenges. Given that India continues to import Russian energy resources, this could be an important step in strengthening strategic partnership between the countries, impacting regional politics and economic relations.
