Anglers Urged to Act Fast: Ukraine Bans Pike Fishing Starting February 15.
Pike Fishing Ban Takes Effect Across Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Starting February 15, 2023, Ukraine has imposed a ban on pike fishing due to the species' spawning season. The restriction will remain in place until March 31. During this period, fishermen are prohibited from catching pike to protect biodiversity during the fish's reproductive cycle. Even after the ban ends, certain limits will continue to apply.
Violating the ban carries penalties ranging from 34 to 85,000 hryvnias. Under Ukrainian law, the fine depends on the severity of the offense:
- Minor violations: a fine of 34–170 hryvnias;
- Serious violations: 340 to 680 hryvnias;
- Significant damage: 17,000 to 85,000 hryvnias.
It is also worth noting that offenses committed during the spawning period may lead to criminal liability.
Spawning Timeline and Catch Limits
The timing of pike spawning is determined by water temperature, which must reach +3 to 5 degrees Celsius. Once spawning concludes, anglers will be allowed to catch pike again, but a daily catch limit of up to 3 kg per person will apply, along with an allowance for one pike measuring at least 50 cm in length. These measures aim to preserve the pike population and maintain ecological balance in Ukraine's water bodies.
The pike fishing ban during spawning season is a key part of Ukraine’s environmental policy, designed to protect biodiversity and restore natural resources. Given the importance of pike in aquatic ecosystems, compliance with these rules is critical for sustaining its population. Such initiatives could also lay the groundwork for future efforts to safeguard other fish species and broader ecosystems.
