Rare Bird Sighting

According to TSN.ua: A large flock of swans, including a rare whooper swan, has been observed on the Prut River near Kolomyia. The birds congregated on an open stretch of the river due to severe frosts that have gripped the region. The whooper swan, which typically winters on the Azov-Black Sea coast, is distinguished by its yellow-and-black bill, where the yellow coloring extends to the nostrils. This sighting is particularly notable as the species is not commonly seen this far inland during winter.

The whooper swan is a specially protected species under the Bern Convention, highlighting the importance of conserving rare birds. Local ecologists are urging residents to follow proper bird-feeding guidelines to ensure the swans have a safe wintering period.

Biodiversity Protection

In a separate event, a hen harrier, another rare member of the hawk family, was recorded in the Kryvorizkyi district of Dnipropetrovsk region. These observations underscore the critical importance of protecting biodiversity in Ukraine, especially amid climate change and the reduction of natural bird habitats. Ukraine's varied landscapes serve as vital corridors and refuges for many migratory species.

The sightings of rare bird species like the whooper swan and the hen harrier emphasize the ongoing challenge of biodiversity conservation in Ukraine. Climate shifts and human impact on bird habitats threaten their survival, making protective measures essential. Adhering to proper feeding rules and safeguarding natural habitats are key to preserving these species in the region.
