Risk of Military Action? The USA Warned Hungary Ahead of the Memorial Date.
U.S. intelligence services warned the Hungarian authorities about a possible armed incident on October 23 – the day of commemorating the 1956 uprising against Soviet occupation. This is reported by Telex.
The information about the possible armed action was passed by U.S. intelligence to the Hungarian side around two weeks ago, the publication notes. The article states that according to the USA, certain individuals may be planning an armed action on the anniversary of the 1956 events.
Although there is no official confirmation yet, Telex reports that over the weekend, Counter-Terrorism Center officers detained half a dozen young people in one of Budapest's pubs.
Sources of the publication claim that the raid is connected with previously received data from the U.S. Secret Service. However, there is currently no information on which Hungarian agency is conducting the investigation.
However, journalists spoke with the owner of the Legenda pub, where the raid took place. He said that the young people were heading to the pub when they were caught right on the street. Pub employees saw how the detention took place but were not informed about the raid.
Hungarian Revolution of 1956
The Hungarian Revolution was the 1956 uprising in the Hungarian People's Republic, suppressed by Soviet troops with the participation of Hungary's state security agency ÁVH - the counterpart of the KGB in the USSR.
The consequence of the bloody events in Budapest was the mass emigration of Hungarians and the loss of prestige of the Soviet Union among Western intellectuals, many of whom left the communist parties of their countries, struck by the vivid example of Russian imperialism. In modern Hungary, the day the revolution started, October 23, became a national holiday.
Recall that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that he does not support Volodymyr Zelensky's victory plan. Orban said that he was "shocked to hear" the presentation of Ukraine's victory plan, after which, according to him, the question arose of what the plan had been up to that point. "If they are now moving to the victory plan, did they previously have a defeat plan?" said Orban.
Earlier, Orban stated that he is "frightened" by Ukraine's victory plan and urged the Chancellor of Germany and the President of France on behalf of the entire European Union to "start negotiations with the Russians as soon as possible."
Also, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban threatens to block aid to Ukraine. This step might help the U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump.
