Drone Strike on Zaporizhzhia Locomotive: How the Train Crew Survived.
Attacks on Ukraine's Railway Infrastructure
According to TSN.ua: On February 2, 2023, Russian forces targeted a diesel locomotive at a station in the Zaporizhzhia region using a drone. The Ukrainian Ministry for Communities and Territories Development reported the strike, which resulted in no casualties as the locomotive crew was sheltering in a safe location at the time. This incident is part of a wider Russian campaign of attacks on Ukraine's critical rail network, which has been a vital lifeline for the country since the full-scale invasion began.
This event fits a pattern of assaults on rail systems. For instance, on New Year's Eve 2026, Russian troops also struck railway infrastructure in the Volyn, Sumy, and Odesa regions. Furthermore, on January 11, 2023, shelling on the Prydniprovska Railway injured a train driver and his assistant. Another serious incident was the attack on a passenger train running from Chop to Kharkiv to Barvinkove on January 27, 2023. Then, on January 30, 2023, Russian invaders targeted seven railway facilities, including the Synelnykove station in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Threats and the Imperative of Safety
These events highlight the severe threat posed to Ukrainian rail transport and underscore the critical importance of ensuring the safety of workers and passengers. The railway infrastructure operates under constant, round-the-clock risk, demanding continuous monitoring and protective measures. The persistent attacks not only endanger lives but also jeopardize the country's ability to maintain economic links and mobility during the conflict. Given these risks, Ukrainian authorities must implement additional measures to protect the rail network and secure the safety of everyone involved in transportation.
