Russian Drone and Missile Strike Cripples Burshtyn Power Plant, Leaving City Without Heat or Water.
Burshtyn Power Plant Targeted in Early Morning Assault
According to TSN.ua: In a pre-dawn attack on February 7, Russian forces launched drones and missiles at the city of Burshtyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. The assault, which began at 4 a.m., inflicted severe damage on the Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant, forcing it to shut down completely. This has resulted in a complete loss of heating and water supply for the city's residents. This strike is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure, particularly during the winter months.
Official sources report the damage to the plant is extensive. Vasyl Andriieshyn, a local government representative, stated the station is currently 'at zero' and the situation remains uncertain as crews have only just begun clearing debris. The lack of heating and running water has caused significant concern among the population.
Efforts to Restore Essential Services
Authorities plan to restore cold water supply in the near future. In the meantime, the city has implemented a special emergency outage schedule, dividing the city into two groups for rolling blackouts. The situation is described as complex, with local officials urging residents to remain calm and follow official guidance.
Vasyl Andriieshyn, Local Government Representative
The attack on Burshtyn aligns with a broader Russian military strategy aimed at destabilizing civilian infrastructure and exacerbating humanitarian crises. The loss of heat and water during the cold season poses severe risks to the local population. While local authorities are taking steps to urgently restore critical services, the situation remains tense, and residents are advised to prepare for a potentially prolonged disruption of utilities.
