Russia Strikes Western Ukraine's Power Grid to Halt Electricity Imports.
Assault on Western Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
According to TSN.ua: Russia has launched a concentrated assault on Ukraine's energy facilities, with a primary focus on the western region. The strategic objective of these attacks is to sever Ukraine's ability to import electricity. On February 7, 2023, Russian forces targeted the main power grid, striking critical 750 kV and 330 kV substations and transmission lines. The primary targets were the Zakhidnoukrainska-750 and Novyi Rozdil-330 substations, as well as the Burshtyn and Dobrotvir thermal power plants.
The Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant is located in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, while the Dobrotvir plant is in the Lviv region. Subsequent explosions occurred in Ivano-Frankivsk on February 17, 2023, causing severe damage. Following the attack on Burshtyn, the city lost its heating supply due to damage to the district heating network. These attacks on energy infrastructure are a hallmark of Russia's war strategy, aiming to cripple civilian life during winter. The resulting electricity deficit was partially offset by imports totaling 2.3 GWh.
Stanislav Ignatyev noted: 'The main goal is to cut Ukraine off from electricity imports.'
These events underscore the critical situation in Ukraine's energy sector and the urgent need to protect key infrastructure from further attacks. The strikes reveal Russia's strategic intent to destabilize the country's energy sector, which could have severe consequences for the population and the economy. In wartime, protecting critical infrastructure is a top priority for Ukrainian authorities, as energy independence is a key factor in ensuring national stability. The escalation of attacks on the power grid also highlights the need for continued international support and solidarity in defending Ukraine's interests.
