Russian Strike on Odesa Power Facility Leaves Over 68,000 Customers Without Electricity.
Power Infrastructure Targeted
According to Novyny.live: On February 21, 2023, Russian forces launched an attack on the energy infrastructure of Odesa, damaging a facility belonging to DTEK 'Odesa Power Grids'. The strike caused significant destruction, with parts of the structure completely demolished. Repair work is expected to be lengthy, which will severely complicate the power supply situation in the region. These attacks are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy grid.
Widespread Blackouts in Odesa
The shelling left a portion of customers without power, specifically residents of the Khadzhybei and Kyiv districts. Currently, over 68,000 customers remain without electricity. Meanwhile, power has been restored to 30,500 households in the Kyiv district following a separate attack that occurred on February 17.
To assist residents affected by the blackouts, resilience points are operating in various districts. These centers provide people with essential resources amid the energy crisis triggered by the recent attacks. The situation in Odesa remains difficult, with ongoing efforts focused on restoring the damaged energy infrastructure.
This attack underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which has been under constant assault throughout the conflict.
Damage to energy facilities not only disrupts the daily lives of residents but also threatens the stability of the regional power supply. Restoring this infrastructure will be critically important for ensuring the normal functioning of the city and sustaining the livelihoods of its inhabitants.
