Ukraine's Power Grid Hit in Major Russian Assault, Triggering Emergency Blackouts.
Widespread Strikes Target Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure
According to TSN.ua: In a large-scale overnight assault on February 7, Russian forces targeted critical energy facilities across Ukraine. The western regions bore the brunt of the attack, with the city of Burshtyn and key assets such as:
- Electrical substations
- 750 kV and 330 kV high-voltage power lines
- Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant
- Dobrotvir Thermal Power Plant
The strikes forced emergency power shutdowns to be implemented nationwide to prevent a wider collapse of the grid.
Current State of the Energy System
As of today, emergency power outage schedules are active in 4.5 to 5 stages, affecting Kyiv and numerous other regions. Special emergency schedules are in effect in eastern and northern oblasts. The attack triggered air raid sirens across Ukraine, and drone strikes continued after 8 a.m., including in the Lviv region.
Ukraine's grid operator, Ukrenergo, activated a request for emergency assistance from Poland. In response to the crisis, staff at nuclear power plants reduced the output of reactor units, a measure confirmed by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The situation remains tense, with energy crews working to restore stability to the national power system. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's critical infrastructure, particularly during the harsh winter months.
This assault is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to destroy Ukraine's critical infrastructure, which has a severe impact on the country's energy security.

In wartime conditions, such strikes threaten not only energy networks but also the lives and well-being of civilians. The Ukrainian government's response to these challenges, including through international aid, will be crucial for ensuring stability in the energy sector.
