Kyiv Hit by Russian Attack, Leaving Over 5,000 Buildings Without Heat and Water.
January 20th Strike on Kyiv
According to Novyny.live: In a nighttime assault on January 20, Russian forces targeted Kyiv, resulting in severe damage to the city's critical infrastructure. The attack left more than 5,000 residential buildings without heating and water supply. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a total of 5,635 buildings lost their heating. This disruption is particularly devastating as nearly 80% of these buildings had only just had their heating restored on January 9th.
The scale of the damage is stark when compared to the situation just before the attack. On January 19th, only 16 buildings out of 6,000 in the city were reported to be without heat, highlighting the severe impact of the Russian strikes. The attack also inflicted major losses on Kyiv's left bank, which was left without a water supply and suffered a complete power blackout.
In response, the city's social infrastructure facilities are switching to autonomous power sources to ensure the operation of critical services. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian energy and utility systems, especially during the winter months.
Current Conditions in the Capital
The situation in Kyiv remains difficult, with residents facing serious challenges in meeting their basic needs. Restoring critical infrastructure and providing the population with essential utilities are now top priorities for local authorities. With winter ongoing, the urgency of a rapid response is increasing, as many people are left without the ability to heat their homes or access clean water.
