Russian Strike on Odesa Region Leaves Parts of the City Without Water.
Odesa Region Attack on February 12, 2023
According to TSN.ua: On February 12, 2023, the Russian military struck the Odesa region, damaging its energy infrastructure. The targeted facility was the 31st major substation owned by the Ukrainian energy company DTEK in the region to be damaged by Russian forces. This attack dealt a severe blow to the power grid, with significant consequences for the local population. These strikes are part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian energy supply, particularly during the winter months.
The shelling cut power to several facilities in Odesa's water supply system. Areas left without running water included:
- The Kyivskyi district of Odesa;
- Parts of the Khadzhybeiskyi district;
- The villages of Lymanka and Chervonyi Khutir;
- The residential complexes "Raiduzhnyi," "Sovinion 1–5," and "Chornomorka";
- The ZhKP "Tairovo" housing association.
Furthermore, water pressure dropped in the Khadzhybeiskyi and Prymorskyi districts of the city.
Emergency Power Outages
On February 11, 2023, emergency power cuts were implemented across Ukraine due to Russian strikes on critical infrastructure. These actions continue to negatively impact daily life and the stability of the region's energy system.
The attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, particularly in the Odesa region, highlight the continuation of Russia's strategic campaign to destabilize vital facilities. Damaging substations and cutting power to water supplies in major cities creates additional hardships for a local population already suffering from the war's consequences. This situation underscores the critical need to protect energy assets and ensure stable supplies of electricity and water for civilians during the conflict.
