Russia Plans a Full-Scale VPN Crackdown: What Users Should Expect.
Tighter Restrictions on VPN Services in Russia
According to TSN.ua: The Russian government is moving to intensify restrictions on VPN services, which are commonly used to bypass censorship, as part of a broader effort to sanitize the information landscape. The Kremlin has decided to limit access to foreign platforms, signaling its intent to tightly manage information flows within the country.
By mid-January, over 400 VPN services had been blocked in Russia—a 70% increase compared to the previous year. This steady escalation reflects a growing policy of cutting off internet resources that enable users to evade censorship. As part of this same approach, Russia has also blocked WhatsApp and deliberately slowed down Telegram, sparking widespread concern among users.
Impact on Daily Life
Complaints about internet disruptions first emerged on March 5, indicating that these restrictions are already affecting everyday life for citizens. On March 25, a promotional video for the Russian messaging app 'Max' began circulating on social media, highlighting the authorities' push to promote domestic communication platforms.
Maksut Shadaev, a Russian official, stated that 'the goal is to reduce the use of VPNs.'
The Kremlin insists that 'all communication restrictions are carried out in strict accordance with the law.' However, as Andrei Svintsov points out, 'Russian authorities may continue to restrict access to popular services,' which could have serious consequences for information freedom in the country.
This tightening of internet control in Russia reflects a broader trend toward centralizing power and limiting free speech. By blocking VPNs and other communication platforms, the Russian government aims to reduce public access to alternative sources of information, potentially undermining democratic processes. Human rights advocates have voiced alarm, warning that such actions could lead to even greater curbs on civil liberties and rights.
