Russia’s evolving assault strategy against Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has released a report detailing a new Russian approach designed to intensify pressure on Ukraine through large-scale strikes involving attack drones and missiles. The events of March 23–24, 2026, exemplify this tactic, which focuses on stockpiling resources to enable more powerful and sustained bombardments.

On April 1, 2026, Russia launched a major offensive against Ukrainian territory using attack drones. Reports indicate that Russia can deploy over 1,000 attack drones in a single wave of attacks. This build-and-strike method means Russian forces spend extended periods accumulating assets to maximize the impact of their offensives.

Impact of the strikes and global response

The assaults carried out under this strategy target civilian infrastructure, raising serious concerns about the safety of non-combatants. The combination of drones and missiles in these operations highlights Russia’s aim to escalate its military campaign, which could have far-reaching consequences for the region.

As expert Andriy Kovalenko noted, “Russian forces have been stockpiling resources for a long time to carry out more intense and prolonged strikes.”

With the intensification of hostilities and the adoption of new Russian strategies, it is crucial to recognize that these attacks not only heighten the threat to civilians but may also shape international reactions to the conflict. The increased use of attack drones could alter the dynamics of warfare and influence how Ukraine and its allies respond. The outcomes of these events may prove decisive for the region’s future and for stability across Europe.
