Russia Upgrades Shahed Drones to Carry Two FPV Units.
Shahed Drones in a New Role
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces have begun employing Shahed-type attack drones as carriers for smaller FPV (First-Person View) drones. Military analysts have confirmed that a single Shahed can now transport two of these FPV drones. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an electronic warfare specialist and advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Defense, verified this development, stating:
"Today I have the first video confirmation of an FPV being carried by a 'Shahed'. I now know that a 'Shahed' carries two FPVs." - Serhiy Beskrestnov
This tactic represents a significant evolution in drone warfare, allowing for more complex and layered attacks. Previously, similar mounting systems for FPV drones were observed on other UAVs like the 'Molniya' and 'Gerbera'. Furthermore, Russia has enhanced the Shahed drones by equipping them with dual warheads. Beskrestnov also issued a warning to anti-air drone crews, urging vigilance:
"I ask all anti-air drone crews to pay attention to the possible presence of FPVs on 'Shaheds'." - Serhiy Beskrestnov
Implications of the New Tactics
Russia's use of Shahed drones as carriers for FPV units highlights a rapid adaptation in combat tactics and the integration of new technologies. The increased effectiveness of these modified strike drones could complicate the tasks of Ukrainian defense forces, raising the threat level to both civilian infrastructure and military positions. This development underscores the urgent need for advancements in air defense systems, as emerging threats demand swift countermeasures and adaptation to a constantly evolving battlefield environment.
