Russian Strikes Target Churches in Gnedyn, Part of Over 700 Religious Sites Damaged in War.
Religious Sites Under Fire in Ukraine
According to UATV: On February 22, 2023, Russian military forces struck Orthodox churches in Gnedyn, located in the Kyiv region. This attack on places of worship has provoked outrage within Ukrainian society, as believers have become victims of military actions. The targeting of religious institutions highlights a particularly devastating aspect of the ongoing conflict, which has seen widespread attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The Scale of the Destruction
According to official data, approximately 200 churches and places of worship have been completely destroyed since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. This fact underscores the extensive damage inflicted on Ukraine's religious and cultural heritage. In a separate incident on January 28, 2023, Russian shelling in Odesa damaged the Holy Dormition Monastery for men.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated: 'Russian terror spares neither churches nor the faithful.'
He further called for an urgent end to the hostilities: 'This war against humanity and life must be stopped—through unity with Ukraine and increased collective pressure on Moscow.' These remarks reflect the Ukrainian government's deep concern for the safety of religious institutions and worshippers across the country.
This incident underscores not only the humanitarian consequences of the war but also its severe impact on Ukraine's cultural and religious legacy. The destruction of churches is part of a broader conflict where military actions consistently inflict heavy losses on civilian populations and their spiritual life. Given this context, the Ukrainian government's appeals to the international community for help in protecting religious sites could be a crucial step toward resolving the conflict and restoring peace in the region.
