UK Defense Minister Points to Russia's Reliance on Foreign Fighters Due to Heavy Losses

Russia's Growing Dependence on Foreign Combatants

According to TSN.ua: British Defense Secretary John Healey has stated that Russia's reliance on foreign fighters in its war against Ukraine is increasing, a direct result of the heavy casualties sustained by its own military forces. According to assessments, Russian troops are now depending on thousands of foreign mercenaries to offset the significant losses incurred in recent months. This reliance underscores the severe manpower challenges facing the Kremlin's war effort.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov provided details on Russian losses over the last two months. In January alone, Russia suffered approximately 9,000 more casualties than it could replace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that around 30,000 Russian military personnel were killed in January. Total Russian losses since the start of the full-scale invasion have now exceeded 1.2 million people. Estimates suggest Russia may have lost about 415,000 personnel killed and wounded last year, with a daily casualty rate averaging 1,130 people in December.

Impact of Casualties on Russian Military Capabilities

Reports also indicate that approximately 17,000 North Korean military personnel have been deployed to fight on Russia's side. The frontline stretches for about 1,200 kilometers. As John Healey remarked, this serves as a crucial reminder to all that Ukraine is under immense pressure. He also emphasized that while Vladimir Putin likes to project an image of relentless and inevitable progress, he is in reality weaker than before.

Mykhailo Fedorov expressed the expectation that Russian monthly losses could reach 50,000 people by summer.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy observed: 'Putin is not worried about this now, but there is a limit at which he will start to worry.'
Russian forces have managed to make advances on certain sections of the front, particularly in the Donetsk region, indicating their attempts to compensate for the losses they have suffered.

The growing dependence of Russia on foreign mercenaries, including North Korean troops, highlights the severity of the situation on the frontline and the difficulties faced by the Russian armed forces. This, in turn, suggests that the high casualties Russia has sustained are jeopardizing its military capabilities and war strategy. The casualty estimates provided by Ukrainian officials point to a critical state of Russian forces, which could influence the future course of the conflict.
