Amid Deep Freeze, Russia Launches Major Missile Barrage Across Ukraine.
Ukraine Endures Major Missile Attack During Intense Cold Snap
According to UATV: Russia has carried out a massive missile strike across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, resulting in at least six civilian casualties and damaging residential buildings and a school. The assault coincided with a severe cold wave, with temperatures in Kyiv plummeting to -20°C (-4°F). The strikes left over 1,000 buildings damaged, cutting off heating for many residents during the extreme weather. This attack is part of a renewed Russian campaign targeting critical infrastructure, a tactic widely condemned by Western allies.
Details of the Assault and Official Response
The barrage on Kyiv occurred in early February 2023, with a significant volley of ballistic missiles launched on the night of February 3rd. The use of ballistic weaponry complicated Ukraine's air defense efforts. Out of 70 missiles fired, Ukrainian forces managed to intercept 38. As military spokesman Yuriy Ihnat stated,
"This time, there was a very, very large amount of ballistic weaponry—we are talking about missiles that fly on a ballistic trajectory."
This indicates that despite a high interception rate, the scale of the attack created a critical situation.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that this was a
"deliberate strike against our energy system and a record number of ballistic missiles."
He stated that the Russian military had used a pause in attacks to stockpile missiles, waiting for the coldest days of the year when temperatures across much of Ukraine dropped to -20°C and below. This strike confirms that Russia has resumed its attacks on Ukraine's critical infrastructure, inflicting significant harm on civilians and energy facilities.
This missile barrage underscores the severe risks facing the Ukrainian population during winter, as the energy grid had already been heavily damaged in previous assaults. Given the escalating threat from Russia, it is crucial for the international community to continue supporting Ukraine's efforts to protect its critical infrastructure and ensure civilian safety. The situation demands an urgent response to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe during the freezing conditions.
