According to ТСН: The Polish army has started checking information regarding a possible attack by Russian armed forces on the Lviv region using the modern medium-range ballistic missile 'Oreshnik'. Reports indicate that strikes were carried out near the border with Poland.

Ukraine warned its neighbors

Suspicion regarding the use of 'Oreshnik' arises from intelligence data. Firstly, the Ukrainian side informed Warsaw in advance about the strikes by medium-range ballistic missiles. Moreover, during the attack, Kyiv provided real-time information about the movement of the target.

Secondly, Polish radar monitoring systems independently detected the target.

‘From the information our army has received, it follows that during the night attack, the Russians used about 20 cruise missiles and plus or minus 30 ballistic ones, including one that could be hypersonic. It was this missile that struck the Lviv region’

Why fighter jets did not take off

In response to the threat, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces put ground air defense systems on highest alert.

Among them:

  • one of the Polish Patriot batteries;

  • several Dutch air defense systems located near Rzeszów.

However, as journalists report, Polish military did not send fighter jets into the sky. The reasons are simple and practical: the aircraft 'would have been powerless to potentially destroy a modern hypersonic missile'.

After the 'Oreshnik' attack on Lviv, the Security Service of Ukraine showed fragments of the missile, which will have the status of physical evidence and are being prepared for further examinations.

This situation once again highlights the high risks faced not only by Ukrainian but also Polish military forces due to active military operations in eastern Ukraine. Such attacks threaten the security of neighboring countries, forcing them to take additional measures to protect their territories.
