EU summit: €90 billion for Ukraine

European Union Summit in Brussels

According to UATV: A two-day summit of EU leaders has kicked off in Brussels, with the primary focus on supporting Ukraine. Officials are weighing a €90 billion loan aimed at bolstering the Ukrainian economy and military. However, Hungary is blocking the decision, citing its need to continue receiving Russian oil.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated: 'Hungary’s position is very straightforward. We are ready to support Ukraine once we have access to our oil.'

Discussions on New Sanctions Against Russia

Also on the agenda is the 20th package of sanctions targeting Russia. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stressed the urgency of finalizing this package, declaring:

'I assume Russia has no intention of agreeing to this deal...'
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten emphasized the loan’s critical role for Ukraine, noting: 'It’s clear that Ukraine needs our comprehensive support to prevail against Russian aggression. The loan is absolutely vital.'

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever called for intensifying pressure on Moscow, stating: 'It’s very simple. This is a political decision, so it must be implemented.' Additionally, the summit revealed that on March 17, Ukraine signaled its willingness to accept EU assistance to restore the Druzhba pipeline. Meanwhile, Viktor Orbán continues to block the loan decision, drawing criticism from other European leaders, including Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

The Brussels summit highlights growing tensions and divisions within the EU over how to support Ukraine, which could impact the speed and effectiveness of aid delivery. Hungary’s veto of the loan underscores how national interests can jeopardize EU unity on critical security and stability issues. This also raises questions about the bloc’s ability to act cohesively in the face of global challenges, particularly Russian aggression.
