Longevity Experts Named 7 Habits for Healthy Aging.
According to ТСН: The desire to live long is something that unites many. Longevity experts recommend paying attention to your health in old age to continue enjoying life.
In an article published in the Huffington Post, specialists shared seven habits that contribute to longevity.
Purpose in Life
The first thing that helps you live better and longer is having a purpose in life.
“The Japanese call this ikigai or 'reason for being.' The goal doesn't necessarily have to be grand or world-changing. It can be found in small yet meaningful activities, such as gardening, caring for a pet, strengthening relationships, or contributing to the development of your community,” says Dr. Erin Martinez, an associate professor at Kansas State University.
Research shows that people who have a purpose in life are 28% less likely to suffer from cognitive impairments, including dementia.
Support of Social Connections
Social connections help prevent cognitive decline.
Studies confirm that social isolation can lead to memory loss in older adults and even dementia.
In particular, a prolonged sense of loneliness can decrease brain volume.
In contrast, a study from Harvard University, which has been ongoing for 87 years, found that the quality of relationships is the strongest predictor of a long and happy life.
Relationships with People of Different Ages
It is also beneficial to have connections with people of different ages.
“These interactions support sharp minds, broad perspectives, and a sense of belonging,” notes Dr. Martinez.
A study in 2021 confirmed that such connections improve physical and mental health.
Avoiding Risky Behavior
Low-risk behavior is important for longevity.
“Low-risk behavior is the biggest factor in exceptional longevity,” asserts Dr. Douglas Vaughan, director of the Longevity Institute.
Research shows that a healthy lifestyle can add 5-6 years to life.
Volunteering
Participating in volunteer projects also brings many benefits.
“Volunteering creates social connections, encourages physical activity, and fosters a sense of purpose, combating loneliness and depression,” says Dr. Martinez.
Volunteers typically live longer and experience more happiness.
Diet Regimen
The timing of meals is also important. Dr. Sebastian Brandhorst emphasizes the significance of regular meals.
Restrictive diets can positively affect health, including weight loss and improved heart condition.
Consistent Sleep Schedule
Sleep is an essential part of the body’s recovery.
“Stable sleep times and quality restore metabolic balance and stabilize immune signaling,” reported Dr. Vaughan.
Poor sleep in the long term can lead to various diseases.
Overall, attentive, open, and conscientious people tend to live longer.
These recommendations demonstrate how important it is to adhere to simple habits in everyday life to improve the quality and duration of life. The more people pay attention to their health, social connections, and activity, the higher the likelihood that they will be able to enjoy their lives in their later years.
