Financial Transparency of 'Hospitallers' Battalion Under Scrutiny as Commander Zinkevych Responds.
Questions Raised Over Finances of 'Hospitallers' Medical Battalion
According to TSN.ua: Public debate is intensifying regarding the financial management of the 'Hospitallers' volunteer battalion, a unit dedicated to evacuating and treating wounded Ukrainian soldiers. Journalists, including Olga Khudetska, have raised concerns about the transparency of the battalion's expenditures, calling for detailed financial reports. In response, the battalion's commander, Yana Zinkevych, has refuted the allegations and stated her willingness to provide information.
Financial Reporting and Threats Against Journalists
Yana Zinkevych, who is also a member of parliament, clarified that the foundation's tax declaration for 2025 has been filed, with full reports scheduled for publication on May 1, 2026. She confirmed investing substantial personal funds into the battalion, stating:
“Over these years, I have invested not thousands, but millions of my own money.”However, questions persist about financial transparency, including the removal of cryptocurrency wallet addresses from the battalion's official website, which some reports suggest may have led to the withdrawal of $210,000.
A Russian drone strike on Pavlohrad destroyed a significant quantity of the battalion's documents, complicating the reporting process. Zinkevych suggested the controversy bears hallmarks of a targeted information operation against Ukraine's volunteer movement, remarking:
“This situation very much resembles a targeted information operation against the volunteer movement.”
Following her publications about the battalion, journalist Olga Khudetska received threats. Zinkevych condemned these threats against the journalist, emphasizing the critical importance of protecting free speech and journalist safety in Ukraine. The commander also expressed frustration that journalists have ignored her offers to cooperate, stating: “Having my direct contact and receiving a clear question from me, 'what specific documents, registers, or statements does your team need to verify our reporting?' you have chosen to ignore dialogue with me.”
Thus, the situation surrounding the 'Hospitallers' battalion remains tense, and further investigation may clarify questions about the organization's financial activities and spending transparency. The volunteer medical battalions that emerged in 2014 are vital to Ukraine's defense, making public trust in their operations essential. The awaited 2026 reports will be a crucial step in resolving these issues. Meanwhile, the threats against a journalist highlight the difficulties media face in covering this topic and underscore the importance of safeguarding journalistic work during wartime. An open dialogue between journalists and the battalion's representatives could significantly impact financial transparency and help rebuild public trust in the organization.
