Orban’s Campaign Visit to Győr Sparks Major Protests and Controversy.
Viktor Orban’s Election Campaign Tour in Hungary
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ongoing campaign tour encountered a significant disruption in the city of Győr, where a large number of counter-demonstrators gathered to voice opposition against his Fidesz party. Despite Győr being considered a stronghold for Fidesz, the protest highlighted growing discontent ahead of the national elections scheduled for April 12. The incident underscores the heightened political tensions as the ruling party fights to retain power.
Domestic Landscape and Election Results
Against the backdrop of intense campaigning, the 2024 European Parliament election results show Fidesz holding 40.5% support, while the Tisza party trails closely with 36%. The gap between Tisza and Fidesz is as follows:
- 16 percentage points among the general population,
- 20 points among decided voters,
- 23 points among “certain” voters.
During Orban’s visit to Győr, tensions escalated as protesters openly criticized government policies. One demonstrator, Peter Magyar, alleged:
“Fidesz brought about a hundred ‘thugs’ into the city to intimidate civilians.”
Responding to the criticism, Viktor Orban fired back: “You support a Ukrainian visa, not the Hungarian people! You want a Ukraine-friendly government and want to give Hungarians’ money to Ukraine!”
The situation in Hungary reflects deepening divisions between rival political factions and a surge in civic activism as the election approaches. These protest actions during the campaign period signal that opposition sentiment is gaining momentum. The April 12 elections will serve as a critical test for Fidesz’s ability to maintain its hold on power amid intensifying competition from Tisza and a growing protest movement.
