How many Ukrainians speak the state language at home: survey results.

According to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, the majority of Ukrainians communicate at home in the state language. Over the past five years, the percentage of people speaking Ukrainian has increased from 52% to 63%. Meanwhile, 13% speak Russian in everyday life. There are also those who communicate in both Ukrainian and Russian - these respondents make up 19%.

According to the results of the survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, a significant number of Ukrainians use the Ukrainian language in everyday life. The proportion of such individuals has risen from 52% to 63% over the past five years. At the same time, 13% choose the Russian language. Some respondents communicate in both Ukrainian and Russian languages, their share is 19%.

It has been found that in the central regions of Ukraine, the number of individuals who communicate in Ukrainian has increased. In 2020, this share was 62%, and now it is 68%. There is also positive dynamics in the south and east of the country. In 2020 in these regions, 22% and 17% respectively communicated in Ukrainian, while in 2025 it is already 39% and 29% respectively.

In some regions, there has also been a decrease in the use of the Russian language in everyday life. For example, in the south, this number has decreased from 42% to 24%, and in the east - from 53% to 32%. Overall, the number of individuals who believe that Russian should not be taught to Ukrainian-speaking students is increasing. In 2023, 52% held this view, and now it is 58%. On the other hand, a minority (38%) believe that Russian should be taught in schools.

Currently, the Ministry of Education and Science supports a ban on speaking Russian during breaks in schools. This decision is aimed at strengthening the Ukrainian language and promoting the languages of national communities of the European Union.

Violations of the language law were recorded in Kyiv. During the first half of 2024, 365 appeals on this issue were registered in the capital.
