Teen Electrocuted on Train Roof in Kyiv: Ukrzaliznytsia Issues Urgent Safety Warning.
Tragic Incident in Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: A teenager was fatally electrocuted on the roof of a train in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district on Sunday, March 29. Two friends accompanying him also suffered burns and were hospitalized. According to Ukrzaliznytsia, the accident occurred on top of an inactive railcar.
Lethal Danger of Overhead Power Lines
The overhead contact wire the teens touched carries over 27,000 volts. This creates a hazardous environment, as an electrical arc can generate temperatures as high as 15,000 °C. In response, the section was immediately de-energized, and the State Emergency Service (SES) was called to the scene.
Rescuers brought the victim's body down from the car and handed it over to law enforcement to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy. In light of this event, Ukrzaliznytsia urged the public to stay vigilant:
“If you see children in dangerous areas or know about train surfing, do not stand by. Call 102, alert railway workers. It could save a life.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by power lines and restricted zones near railway infrastructure. As a result, many people may reconsider safety protocols on the railways, especially concerning minors accessing hazardous areas. Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes the need for public awareness to prevent such tragedies, calling on everyone to remain alert and respond to potentially dangerous situations. It is critical that these incidents are not overlooked, as they can have fatal outcomes.
