Death penalty for blasphemy. Iranian authorities sentenced a famous artist.

Iranian court sentenced singer Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, to death for blasphemy. Amir Tataloo is the first R&B singer in Iran and started his career in 2003. After several arrests, he left the country but was later extradited to Iran from Turkey. Initially, he was given a five-year prison sentence, but later the Supreme Court changed the sentence to death for insulting the Prophet Muhammad. The verdict can be appealed.

Last year in Iran, 901 people were executed, including 31 women. Most of them were convicted of drug-related crimes, but among the victims were also dissidents and activists who participated in protests. In 2023, 853 people were executed, the highest number since 2015.

Among other executions, the death sentence of 29-year-old Samira Sabzian, known as 'child bride', who spent 10 years in prison for killing her husband, stands out. The execution took place in one of the largest prisons in the country, in the suburbs of Tehran.
