US Envoy Meets Lukashenko: New Prisoner Releases and Sanctions Lifted.
John Cole and Alexander Lukashenko Hold Talks in Minsk
According to TSN.ua: On March 19, 2026, U.S. President’s Special Representative John Cole met with Alexander Lukashenko in the Belarusian capital. The discussions led to the announcement of a fresh wave of political prisoner releases and the initiation of a process to remove American sanctions targeting Belarus’s financial sector.
During the meeting, Cole confirmed that the U.S. special mission had facilitated the release of roughly 100 individuals detained for political reasons. Among those newly freed are:
- Katerina Andreyeva
- Eduard Palchys
- Nastya Loyko
- Nikita Zolotaryov
- Sergei Movshuk
- Kirill Kazey
- Nikolai Kuleshov
This latest release follows the December 2025 liberation of opposition leaders Maria Kolesnikova, Viktor Babariko, and human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski. In total, the United States has brokered agreements securing the freedom of over 250 political prisoners.
Additionally, Cole announced the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Belarus’s Ministry of Finance, the Development Bank of Belarus, Belinvestbank, and the companies Belaruskali and Belarusian Potash Company. This move signals a potential diplomatic thaw between the two nations.
“We discussed a possible visit by President Lukashenko to the United States and will work to arrange it,” John Cole stated.
Outlook for Cooperation
The Minsk meeting marks a significant step toward improving U.S.-Belarus relations, opening new avenues for humanitarian initiatives and diplomatic engagement.
This event represents a potential turning point in ties that have been strained in recent years due to political repression in Belarus. The release of political prisoners could reshape the country’s domestic politics and Lukashenko’s international standing, while the removal of sanctions may unlock fresh opportunities for economic collaboration. Continued diplomatic efforts by both sides could foster further dialogue and cooperation in other areas, contributing to regional stability.
